THE GOOK’S GUIDE TO VIETNAMESE

Nothing beats my Mum’s BUT for something similar I’d go to Cabramatta, Bankstown or Flemington.

THE GOOK’S GUIDE TO YUM CHA

ZILVA

Clean, large and non-cramped is my style of yum-cha eating. Plenty of choices, lots of trolleys, quick service that doesn’t break the back. Fill up on prawn dumplings, chicken feet and peking duck. Before hitting the dessert trolley and downing those buttery flakey egg custard tarts, sesame seed egg custard balls or tofu with sweet syrup.

THE GOOK’S GUIDE TO PUB STEAK

CARLISLE CASTLE

Locals know this tiny pub serves A grade food. The steak with crispy risotto cake and jus will have you at first bite. Not a cheap steak meal but hits the spot for a charry, perfectly cooked steak craving. The kangaroo and specials never disappoint.

THE GOOK’S GUIDE TO PIZZA

LOVE SUPREME

Former Arthur’s Pizza boys have sewn their own turf with lotsa love. Go the italian sausage with harissa or the ragu. Don’t skimp and order the family size – you will demolish the crispy base and flavourful toppings.

THE GOOK’S GUIDE TO CAFES

GNOME

Wild duck pies with delectably smooth parsnip mash or the breakfast board with ricotta, smoked double ham, tomato, avocado. Finished with the clean crisp taste of a filtered coffee with a dash of milk.

LUXE

The original Bondi Junction Westfield Luxe still rocks my world as the most consistantly amazeballs coffee ever (and I have skim milk too). Head over to the bigger barn in Newtown to have the poached eggs with cured ocean trout and potato hash – the best way to start a day. And it’s all organic, and tastes every bit delish! Don’t forget to take a custart tart for the road too, this is a M.U.S.T.

THE GOOK’S GUIDE TO SUSHI TRAIN

SUSHI-CHOO

For the $20 all you can EAT. Seriously great value. Stuff ya face with lots of edamame, gyozas, deep-fried pancho prawns, salmon rolls, seaweed salad. For this city-hot-spot you get to fill up before you ship out. The $20 all you can eat is only available Mon – Fri 1pm – 2pm or 5pm – 7pm.

THE GOOK’S GUIDE TO JAPANESE

SUSHI SUMA

Incredible value for money especially at lunch time. Pick from a set lunch menu for $15 which is H-U-G-E. Definitely go the Sashimi with Teriyaki Fish, you also get a miso, agadashi tofu and rice with the set menu. The dinner set menu for $33 is plenty for two to share and comes with a great dessert of green tea icecream with red bean and cornflakes. So make some room before you go!

MISO

Canteen in feel, but big in value. Miso delivers the closest thing to Japanese tonkatsu outside of it’s home country. The ‘very popular’ pork tonkatsu is for lovers of perfectly crumbed but not-too-oily fried pork with sides of coleslaw, potato salad, miso and pickles. This place is food-hawt, get in early – doors open at 5:30pm for dinner or brave the wait, which usually isn’t longer than 15 minutes. With all tonkatsu’s under $20, it’s no surprise this is a popular city joint – with combinations to suit any japanese lover. Side note: takeaway at lunch and dinner is even cheaper.

THE GOOK’S GUIDE TO BAKERY

BLACKSTAR PASTRY

This hole-in-the-wall has savoury and sweet pastries to-die-for. Stop by for a lambshank pie with a coffee and finish off with their famous chocolate eclair or ginga ninja – yuuuuum! The service is a little on the hippy-side and seating is limited but proof is in the pastries.

THE GOOK’S GUIDE TO PIE

BLACKSTAR PASTRY

The lambshank pie is like mum’s Sunday roast lamb with roast veges has been put into the flakiest, buttery but sturdy pie – structure is very important factor for me. My regular Saturday Breakfast with a large skinny latte is the best start to the weekend.

THE GOOK’S GUIDE TO CHEAP THAI

LET’S EAT

Large servings, charry-wok flavour on the Pad See Eew, crispy pork belly, melt-in-the-mouth massaman and the desert-doesnt-break-the-bank at $3.50 you can’t go wrong with a little black sticky rice with thai custard. A reliable and heavenly cheap eat.

THE GOOK’S GUIDE TO MID-PRICED THAI

SPICE I AM

The original in Slurry Surry Hills is still the Thai that I crave the most, you can often find me dining there at lunchtime howing into the crispy pork belly or the Green Curry. Their whole fried Snapper with Tamarind is to-die-for and the Pad Thai has no red sickly sauce in sight, but the perfect sweet-salty-crunchy sauce that don’t leave NO foul taste in the mouth.

THE GOOK’S GUIDE TO HIGH-END THAI

LONGRAIN

The best. THAT egg net, THAT curry, THAT desert platter. OMFG there is nothing that makes me more happy than thai with a kick-arse cocktail. Stop by Shortgrain for lunch, for a cheeky longrain taster.

THE GOOK’S GUIDE TO THE BEST RIBS

MS. Gs

Jow’s sweet and sour ribs are utterly delectable, lickable and seriously go to Ms. Gs knowing that you will be fighting your guest for the last rib. Served with lots of mint on top means it’s kinda healthy and hearty. Definitely not one to go with the “veg-oh”.
