Tiny Chocolate Terrariums

I’m one of those people who loves a fad. Remember the liver cleansing diet or when feature walls were the thang? I’ve been there, yep – I’ve done it… shame on me. Twenty twelve was the year for my obsession with terrariums.

I obsessed over miniscapes. If you haven’t heard of miniscapes – click on over there for a terrarium-perve, but then come on back. Miniscapes create the cutest (and incredibly crafted) tiny living worlds that can sit on your table or hang above your bed or kitchen or bathroom – anywhere! I’ll order one some day… hint hint, it’s Valentines day coming soon Round Eye!

What I love about terrariums is that it brings a little greenery inside. And for some reason that makes me smile – a bit like my one by one metre veggie patch outside under the stairs. One night in my sleep, I dreamt up this edible version of these little green terrariums that make me oh-so happy. It is slightly crazy, slightly oh-tee-tee – but very pretty – almost too pretty to eat!

My tiny chocolate terrariums are made of chocolate flourless cake (recipe here), edible microherbs, wild fennel flowers (I found some growing down the end of my street) and encased in their own vessel (made out of acetate). These do take a little while to assemble but make a bold statement.

Imagine bringing these babies out for an afternoon tea with the ladies – you’d get a big ooh-ahhh possibly followed by a round of applause. Hopefully, you’ll cut the looking short and just dig in - funnily enough herbs and chocolate is a great combination.

TINY CHOCOLATE TERRARIUMS

INGREDIENTS
1 FLOURLESS CHOCOLATE CAKE (sEE RECIPE HERE)
EDIBLE MICRO HERBS OR FLOWERS
RAINBOW CHOP CHIPS (USE BROWN ONLY)
1 X A3 SHEET OF ACETATE

YOU WILL ALSO NEED
1 X CIRCLE CUTTER (mINE WAS 5CM WiDE)
MEASURING TAPE
SCISSORS
RULER
CLEAR TAPE

LET’S GET COOKING

STEP ONE Make your chocolate soil bases. Cut circles out of the cooled flourless chocolate cake, arrange on platter.
STEP TWO Make the cylindrical vessels out of acetate to house your tiny terrarium. Measure the exterior of the cutter, this will be the length of your cylinder, make the height anything you want. Mark up and cut out your vases rectangles out of the acetate. Create cylinders by sticking the short edges of the rectangle together with clear tape (overlap slightly). Set aside.
STEP THREE Start planting! Using a small skewer (or piece of dry spaghetti) pierce the cake, then insert your micro herbs. Repeat til you are happy with the arrangement. Add a few chocolate rocks by using the brown coloured rainbow choc chips.
STEP FOUR Carefully slide your acetate cylinders over your terrarium arrangement.
Serve with mini dip paddles.
